USEF
The following is a statement from the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) concerning the ingredients in Absorbine® Veterinary Liniment and Absorbine® Veterinary Gel:
Menthol, SD alcohol, witch hazel, plant extracts of echinacea and wormwood; propylene glycol, cyclomethicone, glycerine, tetrahydroxypropyl ethylenediamine, acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, chloroxylenol, xanthum gum, green 5, yellow 6, yellow 5, blue 1, iodine, acetone, potassium iodide, thymol, wormwood oil and water are permitted under the Therapeutic Substance Provision of the USEF Drugs and Medications Rule.
Spearmint oil and calendula are forbidden; however, provided the products containing these substances are administered only topically and as recommended by the manufacturer, there is no need for restricting their use during competitions under USEF rules. However, if these substances are used inappropriately e.g., in a manner other than topically, this could result in a positive finding in the blood or urine of the horse, which would be a potential violation of the rules.
